Expansion Update: Joining the Charter School Growth Fund Portfolio and Next School Location |
While it has been quite different for me to not be in the School of Grammar Principal role this year, it’s been so exciting to both work on our Eagle Ridge Academy expansion and be able to be out and about in our current building greeting students, hearing about how their year is going so far, and what they’re excited about. It’s a daily reminder of why we want to be able to offer a K-12, time-tested, Classical Liberal Arts education to more children and families!
Below are quite a few exciting updates regarding where we are in our expansion process. A reminder that we have our third virtual Gryphon Conversation on Expansion next Wednesday, October 29. Also, please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Charter School Growth Fund and Great Minnesota Schools
We are pleased to announce that Eagle Ridge Academy has received approval from the Charter School Growth Fund to partner with us. This partnership not only provides critical funding but, more importantly, gives us access to a highly experienced and strategic organization that supports schools like ours in achieving sustainable growth. Their guidance will be invaluable as we continue to expand the reach of our classical education model.
In addition, we are hosting visits from Great Minnesota Schools as we explore another potential partnership. Great Minnesota Schools has a strong track record of strategically supporting schools that serve Minneapolis students, and we are eager to learn from their expertise as we plan for the future.

Next School Location Update
While we had hoped to expand in the Chanhassen area, we were unable to find a financially feasible facility that meets the needs of our students. After reviewing 11 potential properties, we concluded that none provided the right combination of affordability, accessibility, and suitability for our programs. We will continue to explore options in that area for future growth.
In the meantime, our focus has shifted toward finalizing a lease agreement for a former private school facility in Brooklyn Center. This location would allow us to better serve our current families in the north metro while also creating new opportunities for growth in a community where high-quality educational options are greatly needed.
Thank you for your ongoing support and trust as we continue to pursue our mission of providing an excellent classical education to more students across Minnesota.

Message from the Executive Director on School Closing and Late Start Decision-Making Process |
We live in Minnesota and, on occasion, it will be necessary for Eagle Ridge Academy to cancel or start school late because of snow or severely cold temperatures. As an administrator for the past 20 years, I have had much experience with making the decision to stay open, close, or start late because of inclement weather. As we recognize and appreciate the fact that every family has a different situation, we realize that our decisions will not meet the needs of all. Therefore, I’d like to clearly communicate ERA’s decision-making process when cancelling or starting school late. |
|
|
|
For cold weather, most school districts use a wind chill chart to determine the danger zone of the wind chill. If the wind chill is forecasted to be 35 degrees below zero, then you will see schools start to cancel. Every district has individual circumstances to consider. For example, ERA does not have students who walk to school and our bus riders generally do not wait for the bus outside but in a warm vehicle. This would cause some to assume that Eagle Ridge Academy students have less exposure and risk. However, if a bus breaks down, it would take a minimum of 45 minutes to replace the bus. That is too long for our students to be in the cold. Some schools, especially those outside the metro area, will often run a two-hour late start. I generally do not believe this to be a good option but realize we may need to use this strategy from time to time. For example, the two-hour late start is effective if the temperature warms between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m.
For snow accumulation, many other factors exist. These factors include total accumulation, time of the accumulation, progress of snow plows according to the DOT, and the continued weather forecast. Generally, southwest metro schools collaborate with each other to make decisions. Eagle Ridge Academy is in a special circumstance in that we have students from many cities. While Eden Prairie and Edina may receive little snow, Shakopee and Chaska may receive large amounts. In cases like these, we may hold school as usual; however, we will excuse students who were not able to safely travel to school.
All cancellations and delays will be reported on WCCO, Facebook, text, and email. Our goal is to have the information communicated by 6:00 a.m. for the convenience of families, yet give the Administrative Team time to make the best decision. I truly understand the inconvenience of school cancellations to families, student learning, and scheduling. Know that the decisions we make always place student safety first, and we are willing to accept the inconvenience, knowing that your children are out of harm’s way.
Sincerely,
Jason Ulbrich, Executive Director

Help ERA Replace Recess Equipment - Give to the Max Early Giving Begins Saturday, November 1 |
To keep recess fun and engaging for students of all ages, Eagle Ridge Academy regularly updates and replenishes its play equipment and indoor recess supply.
Kick, toss, bounce, or jump—your Give to the Max Day gift can replace a soccer ball, football, basketball, jump rope, or gaga pit ball and keep the fun going!
From our youngest kindergarteners to our high school seniors, every student deserves the chance to stay active and have fun during recess and lunch. Over time, balls deflate, jump ropes break, and board games lose pieces—so replenishing this equipment is essential to keeping playtime safe, active, and enjoyable for everyone.
Believe it or not, about 20% of our balls get kicked over the fences and into the ravine each year! While it’s all part of the fun, it means we regularly need to replace equipment that can’t be recovered until the seasons change. Your support helps us keep playtime going strong for every student.
|
|
|
During Give to the Max this November, you can help keep classroom resources in place by providing the equipment our students need to stay active and have fun!
Give to the Max is a statewide outpouring of support for thousands of nonprofits and schools across Minnesota. The Giving Holiday is scheduled for Thursday, November 20, but you don’t have to wait to support Eagle Ridge Academy, as Early Giving begins November 1! Early gifts will be counted toward Give to the Max prize incentives and giving day totals. Together, we hope to raise more than $1,500 on Give to the Max Day for new recess equipment. Join the entire community by pledging your support this November. Learn more and schedule a donation for Give to the Max Day here!

Learning in Community at the MN Classical Education Conference |
|
|
As our students got a well-deserved break from their studies over Fall Break, our teachers engaged in learning and reflection to help continue improving their craft. Teachers dug into the results of their teaching and learning of their specific students during our Professional Development early in the week. Later in the week, Eagle Ridge hosted the 9th annual Minnesota Classical Education Conference with sessions centered on Writing Across the Disciplines.
The energy was palpable as teachers came together to learn about differentiating writing throughout the Trivium, reaching reluctant writers, and elevating joy in writing just to name a few. Participants practiced writing exercises across the disciplines of science, math, English, history, art, music, all while incorporating virtue, and walked away with fresh ideas and tools to use with their students Monday morning. The leisurely learning was refreshing and rejuvenating as seen by the lengthy notes, the bright eyes, and the animated conversation
A big thank you to our ERA teachers who shared their knowledge with Classical schools across the state! With seven ERA teachers presenting at the conference, Eagle Ridge showed once again why our school stands as a leader in providing a robust, challenging, and engaging Classical Education for all. Interested in learning more about what we do in the classroom? Contact one of our presenters below to hear more about how these elements make our Classical classrooms come alive!

Doctor's Notes, Over-the-Counter Medication, and Extra Inhalers/Epi-Pens/Prescription Medication |
Parents do NOT need to drop off hard paper copies of doctor's notes and medical documentation to the Main Office. Please email photos of doctor's note or PDF attachments to nurse@eagleridgeacademy.org instead.
The Health Office provides Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Zyrtec, Tums, Pepto Bismol, pain relief spray and Hydrocortisone cream (anti-itch cream). If you would like the Health Office to treat your child's symptoms with over-the-counter-medications without having to call for parent approval at every health office visit, email nurse@eagleridgeacademy.org and give the Health Office continuous permission. You may approve all over-the-counter-medication or you can approve a select few. With over-the-counter-medication approval, students are given doses based on age and weight and are always asked if they've taken any medicine prior to their Health Office visit. If the Health Office does not have a flag in the student's profile indicating parental approval, they will need to call for consent at every visit prior to administering the medication. They ask that parents call back as soon as possible if left a voicemail, so your child can be treated promptly for their symptoms.
If you would like to have an extra inhaler, epi-pen, or prescription medication kept in the Health Office for your child, please drop them off in the Main Office and email nurse@eagleridgeacademy.org a photo or PDF attachment of written doctor's orders/action plan and the Medication Authorization Form.
